May — Feast of Agios Konstantinos & Agia Eleni (21 May)
The island's patron saint's day. Every 21 May, Kastellorizo honours Saints Constantine and Helen at the church of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni — built in the 19th century, its roof supported by granite pillars taken from the ancient Temple of Lycian Apollo. Mass, procession and a traditional celebration mark the island's main religious and community event, early in the season.
June — Sporting Events
Early summer brings a more active side to the island. In recent years, Kastellorizo has hosted open-water swimming and running events that draw participants to its crystal-clear waters and rugged trails — a chance to experience the island through sport before the peak-season crowds arrive. July — The Water Festival (19 July, eve of Profitis Ilias)
One of Kastellorizo's most beloved and joyful traditions. On 19 July, the eve of the feast of Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias), the whole island erupts into a spontaneous water celebration. Locals and visitors roam the harbour and village streets armed with buckets and hoses, cheerfully dousing everyone in sight — and pushing one another, fully clothed, straight into the sea. The chaos gives way to a lively seaside panigiri with traditional music, dancing, and food and drink shared along the port.
The custom carries real meaning. It traces back to 1828, when islanders displaced during the Greek War of Independence finally returned home. According to local legend, the island's lone priest was so overjoyed at the sight of the returning ships that he leapt into the sea to welcome them — and the community has been jumping into the water ever since. It is a celebration of homecoming and belonging, and one of the most memorable times to experience the island.
August — "Beyond Borders" International Documentary Festival
Every year in the last week of August, Kastellorizo hosts the Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival, an acclaimed event celebrating documentary films exploring history, culture, human rights and current affairs. Open-air screenings beneath the stars, exhibitions, masterclasses and discussions bring filmmakers and visitors from around the world to the island, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere unlike any other in the Dodecanese.
October — Kastellorizo Puzzle Festival
A cultural and scientific festival unlike any other, built around the Megisti Puzzle Museum — the only museum of its kind in Greece, opened in 2020.
